Meet & Greet: Trends in Blockchain Adoption

On the 12th of April, BlockStart project has joined forces with Blockchain Lithuania and BCCS Cluster to organize a hybrid event for BlockStart community globally and the blockchain community in Lithuania: “Meet & Greet – Trends in Blockchain Adoption”.

The goal was to discuss the current state and future trends of blockchain adoption, discover how blockchain can help to solve some of the most pressing issues the world is facing today, including sustainability and disaster relief, and get to know the main highlights of BlockStart’s programme and the impact-related projects of 2 of its startup finalists. The event took place at ROCKIT, co-working space in Lithuania for Fintech and Sustainable Innovation startups

From Blockchain to Web3 – BlockStart Startups 3rd Demo Day

More than 250 people joined our third Demo Day, to find out what 6 of Europe’s most promising blockchain startups have been working in the last 6 months.

On the 24th of February, BlockStart provided its slight contribution to shed a dim light of hope on one of the darkest days in humankind’s history, showcasing concrete examples of how blockchain can have a positive impact on Society.

João Fernandes, Project Manager & Investment Analyst at Bright Pixel and leader of the BlockStart consortium presented the main takeaways of BlockStart accelerator over the past 3 years. Sabine Brink, Global Blockchain Lead at Shell, took over the stage in a passionate keynote speech about how blockchain can accelerate the energy transition. Then it was the time everyone was waiting for and it was the moment for BlockStart’s top 6 blockchain startups to shine! AgeVoltBlockFraudsBlockTacComunitariaDigital Village and HOPU pitched their solutions, developed throughout BlockStart’s 3rd Acceleration Programme and with the help of the programme’s mentors and experts.

Blockchain: regulation in the decentralized world – BlockStart Policy Conference

More than 170 people joined our Policy Conference, exploring the concept of decentralization and self-regulation in the blockchain community.

On February 24th, 10 am CET (Brussels time), BlockStart blockchain startup acceleration programme held an online blockchain regulation and policy conference “Blockchain: regulation in the decentralized world”. To make a step further in discussing the best policy approaches, the conference focused on the question of whether top-down regulation and the decentralized essence of blockchain are compatible and how to best regulate the emerging sector.For more information, read the blogpost, watch the video recording and access the official webpage of the event.

BlockStart at the 6th European Blockchain Convention

After participating in the 5th edition of EBC in April this year (presenting its 3rd and final Open Call, accompanied by the testimonials of 4 finalists from the 1st acceleration programme: DatarellaInfidiaKedeon and REXS.IO), BlockStart was once again invited to present at the 6th edition, held on 13 to 16 December, together with 4 startup finalists from the 2nd acceleration programme: ComeTogetherKnowtaryLoanXchain and Motoblockchain.

Blockchain for sustainability: opportunities and challenges

On the 7th of December, industry experts and startup representatives shared their insights on how blockchain solutions can incentivize sustainable behaviour and contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Speakers discussed the potential of blockchain in establishing working sustainable solutions for positive environmental effects and sustainable development. Also, various use cases were presented.

How European policy initiatives can enable the future of blockchain

The policy workshop “How European policy initiatives can enable the future of blockchain” aimed to discuss the current state of the regulatory landscape in Europe, identifying the best practices and moments for advancement and providing input into removing regulatory barriers for SMEs to adopt DLT and developing a compelling legal framework. Blockchain and related technologies have the potential to fundamentally transform a wide range of industries and the regulatory framework of such technology should be understood as a ‘living strategy’. It must be constantly reviewed to ensure that it grows with and encourages innovation within the industry.

Application of NFTs: beyond art and collectables

What are the possibilities of NFTs application?

NFTs mark a turning point for digital transformation, as applications and integrations are spilling to various sectors: from music and events to energy and supply chains. To discover the transformative potential and opportunities NFTs present for DLT developers and adopters, the BlockStart project team invited founders of NFT startups and experts for a discussion on the 28th of October, between 3pm and 4pm CET/Brussels Time. They aimed to identify a few possible answers to the question: what are the possibilities of NFTs application? Each speaker, while sharing their approach and application of NFTs, also presented their view on the future developments.

10 blockchain solutions looking for adopters

Meet our top 10 blockchain startups and get to know the solutions they are developing in the scope of BlockStart.

On the 20th of October 2021, BlockStart organized a showcase Webinar to present its top 10 blockchain startups to an audience of potential SME adopters willing to implement the blockchain solutions that are being developed in the project’s 3rd Acceleration Programme. SME adopters could then better evaluate if our startups are the right fit for their business needs and challenges and apply to BlockStart’s final pilot stage until 10 November 2021, 5pm CET/Brussels Time.

BlockStart’s 3rd Ideation Kick-off event

Ideation event kick-starts BlockStart’s 3rd Acceleration Programme and selects top 10 DLT/blockchain startups.

On the 27th and 28th of July 2021, BlockStart organized the project’s 3rd Ideation event, that officially kick-started its Acceleration Programme. This two-days online event was the bridge between the selection of DLT/blockchain developers and the challenges that SMEs face.

The Ideation Kick-off event brought together more than 120 representatives from the previously selected top 24 DLT/blockchain startups of Open Call #3, the 10 selected end-user SMEs (which have applied to BlockStart’s Open Call #3 for end-user SMEs, first cut-off date), BlockStart’s Advisory Board, expert guests in both blockchain and the target sectors, and the consortium members.

Blockchain Beyond the Hype – BlockStart Startups 2nd Demo Day

On June 30, more than 150 viewers joined BlockStart’s 2nd Demo Day online event, to hear from our top 5 startups and discuss how to get further funding from the blockchain ecosystem.

On the 30th of June, at 3pm CET (Brussels Time), all eyes were on BlockStart‘s 2nd Demo Day online event. Over 100 people joined the streaming of the event, and 40 followed the discussion live on BlockStart’s YouTube channel. The event was presented by João Fernandes, from Bright Pixel, leader of the BlockStart consortium. Carla Puel and David Chreng-Messembourg, VC Investors from LeadBlock Partners, a blockchain-focused VC company, were the keynote speakers, and took over the stage in a passionate speech about tips on getting VC funding, key highlights on funding, maturity, product use cases and success stories in the B2B Blockchain ecosystem.

Then it was the time everyone was waiting for and it was the moment for BlockStart’s top 5 blockchain startups to shine! Motoblockchain, LoanXchain, Knowtary, IBISA and ComeTogether pitched their solutions, developed throughout BlockStart’s 2nd Acceleration Programme and with the help of the programme’s mentors and experts.

Blockchain: Latest trends, myths and things you might not know

On the 9th of June, BlockStart organized a Webinar on blockchain latest trends, myths and things people might still not know about this technology and its applicability.

While some people stress blockchain’s disruptive potential, others remain somewhat more skeptical. But what is blockchain all about? We have compiled a list of presentations of the things you should know about this relatively new technology.

Andrius Bartminas – founder at Superhow, delivered a presentation about blockchain and 10 interesting facts about the technology. Mirko Lorenz – Expert at TruBlo project, Innovation Manager at Deutsche Welle, introduced unexpected areas of Blockchain application. Silvan Jongerius – Expert at B-Hub for Europe project, talked about blockchain regulation and explained the bittersweet relationship between blockchain and GDPR. Baptiste Cota, blockchain VC investor, Founding Partner at LeadBlock Partners, presented blockchain technology trends and gave participants an exclusive opportunity to learn about the findings of the “Enterprise Blockchain 2021” report, which will be officially published later this year. Once learned more about blockchain, Top3 sectors/industries for blockchain were presented by BlockStart project expert Vytautas Černiauskas, from CIVITTA.

How to make sure regulation helps and not hinders blockchain

On the 27th of May, BlockStart organized a Webinar on blockchain technology regulation and how to build the most appropriate regulatory framework which would support sustainable blockchain innovation. This Webinar was co-organized with H2020 Project B-Hub for Europe and Lithuanian Accelerator, Spherik Accelerator.

How to find a balance between encouraging new ideas and fostering innovation and protecting consumer rights and ensuring prevention of bad acts? How to make sure regulation helps and not interferes with the development of blockchain-based solutions? What are the current initiatives, projects, successful pilots? Can effective communication and consultations between governments, technologists, and the broader community enable all parties to better understand the interests and concerns of blockchain development and the impact of such technology more broadly? These were some of the questions our experts tried to answer in the one and a half hours panel discussion.

BlockStart Open Call #3: 2ndWebinar & Q&A

In this Webinar, Nadine Teles and João Fernandes, part of the team behind BlockStart, presented BlockStart’s Acceleration Programme and the guidelines and procedures when applying for its Open Call #3, the final one. They showed the steps future applicants should take to apply and tips to choose the right track, based on lessons learned from Open Call #1 and #2.

Former alumni from BlockStart’s 1st Pilot stage – Datarella, startup developer, and Go Limpets, SME adopter of blockchain technology – were also invited to provide their testimonials of what is like to be part of the teams selected and how their companies have grown with the programme. Philipp Kothe, Blockchain Architect at  Datarella, spoke about Datarella’s blockchain solution development in BlockStart and how they were able to achieve all technology and business goals and KPIs during their acceleration process. Vitor Vieira, Co-founder of Go Limpets, also provided a very interesting feedback on their experience in the programme as an SME adopter and very insightful tips on how we should look at the power of data and data trust nowadays.

At the end of the Webinar, there was time for Q&A, and several future applicants’ questions were answered. As this will be BlockStart’s last Open Call, preparation is key when applying to our Acceleration Programme, as this will be blockchain startups and end-user SMEs willing to implement blockchain last chance to apply!

Exploring Blockchain Ecosystem: Collaboration Between Startups and SMEs

On the 28th of April, BlockStart organized a Webinar that promoted startups and SMEs collaboration. The experience shared by BlockStart startups Kedeon and Rexs.io brought great insights and recommendations for other startups – blockchain developers – and SMEs – blockchain adopters. Throughout the webinar, Industry experts shared their thoughts on the topic: Richard Crook, Founder and CEO of LAB577 and Mirko Lorenz, Expert at H2020 blockchain project NGI TruBlo, as well as SME adopter Latitudo40, which worked with Rexs.io to implement their blockchain solution.

EU Startups Summit

BlockStart partnered with the EU Startups Summit and organized a workshop on 30 April at 10:30pm CET entitled “BlockStart: accelerating & funding blockchain startups” on the amazing opportunities to blockchain startups provided by the launching of our 3rd and final Open Call #3. This workshops was held by BlockStart’s Project Coordinator, João Fernandes, who presented BlockStart and the perks of participating at our acceleration programme, Mirko Kikovic, CEO and Co-founder of Infidia and Agata Kukwa, Head of Communication of Rexs.io, BlockStart alumnies from our 1st blockchain acceleration programme. Between 12 and 16 April, BlockStart was present at the European Blockchain Convention (EBC), that was held online this year. The EBC is currently the leading blockchain event in Europe, and every year it invites inspiring keynotes and delivers high-level quality blockchain content through panel discussions and workshops. Everything from regulation and future challenges to new blockchain trends and technologies goes through this event, where one-to-one meetings and networking opportunities bring value to all involved in the European blockchain ecosystem.

How policy makers can support the digitalization for European SMEs

Working breakfast with the European Parliament, EASME, DG Connect and 3 H2020 blockchain support projects

Hosted by Adriana Maldonado López, MEP member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and substitute on the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and on the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age (AIDA), in this session 3 different blockchain acceleration programmes supported by the European Commission were presented – BlockStart, Blockchers and Blockpool – and some success stories regarding the implementation of blockchain technologies in Europe were showcased, through companies Vottun, Vestigia and Datarella.

Also, some challenges and policy recommendations related to the future implementation of Distributed Ledged Technologies in Europe were proposed and the vision of the future of DLTs in Europe was explained by DG Connect and EASME representatives. This online session was a good opportunity to know first-hand the challenges and opportunities linked to the final uptake of these breakthrough technologies.

Policy Workshop on Regulation of Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

On the 12th of November 2020 at 11h30 CET, BlockStart partner CIVITTA organized an online policy workshop in order to collect feedback from key finance industry players on the potential and challenges of Decentralized Finance (DeFi). The event was co-organized with ROCKIT, the number one space in Lithuania where top fintech innovators, creators and founders build the future of financial technologies.

The objective of the panel discussion was to articulate the emerging trends on the market, focusing on the relevant regulatory instruments that are already in place and areas where regulation is missing regarding decentralized Finance, or DeFi, as it is commonly used. The panelists were challenged to discuss the improvements needed and rethink whether the current framework that is in place to regulate the decentralized market needs to be re-assessed.

The panel discussion was led by Vytautas Černiauskas, expert at CIVITTA and included the following professionals: Audrius Šilgalis, Head of Investment Services of Bank of Lithuania, Oleg Marofejev, Chief Product Owner for Open Banking of Swedbank Lithuania, and Sumit Kishore, Head of Operations at Consensys, a blockchain solution provider.

The participation of a legislator, a traditional financial institution and a blockchain innovator ensured a complementary and inclusiveness of views, making sure that regulator and innovators angles were presented, and providing much needed policy recommendations on this blockchain-related area of Decentralized Finance.

Shaping Europe’s blockchain future: BlockStart startups Demo Day

On October 29, more than 100 viewers joined BlockStart’s Demo Day online event, to hear from our top 5 startups and discuss how to shape Europe’s blockchain future.

Panel discussion on the potential of decentralized finance

On 14 October, BlockStart partnered with Startup Lithuania to promote a much needed discussion on decentralized finance – why will it make a difference and where it is headed.

On the 14th of October, at 1pm CET (Brussels Time), all eyes were on BlockStart’s Panel discussion on the potential of decentralized finance, live on Facebook, organized by CIVITTA in the scope of BlockStart’s programme. This Panel discussion was held in the framework of Startup Fair, an annual and the main international startup ecosystem event in Lithuania.

Our experts, Mr. Martin Quensel, Co-Founder of Centrifuge, Mr. Kel van Schreven, Co-Founder of KR1, and Mr. Marc Zeller, Integrations Lead at Aave discussed how decentralized finance works, what are its benefits and drawbacks, areas of practical application and chances for innovation. This panel was moderated by Vytautas Černiauskas, Expert at Civitta and Startup Division, also member of the BlockStart Team.

While Mirko Kikovic, from Infidia, spoke about his journey as a DLT/blockchain developer in BlockStart, Srdjan Tomasevic provided a very interesting feedback on their experience as an end-user SME/adopter, who has now been partnered with Infidia during the Pilot stage of our programme.

On 9 September 2020, more than 65 viewers joined BlockStart’s online event, to hear from our expert & discuss the current state of blockchain technology.

The Webinar was presented by Vytautas Černiauskas, expert at CIVITTA, with over 13 years of experience in business development, operations, project management, communications and managing startups. On the 9th of March, the Startup Division of CIVITTA, BlockStart partner, has organized a physical event, together with H2020 blockchain projects BlockStart, Block.IS and B-Hub for Europe, to talk about new opportunities for startups, SMEs, corporations, and public institutions in the blockchain sector.

Bright Pixel and UTRUST teamed up again to connect ambitious DLT/blockchain startups and SMEs with investors, business angels and the tech industry at a unique satellite event during the Web Summit (#websummit2019) in Lisbon, on the 6th of November 2019. The onboarding was a breeze! Top blockchain startups and SMEs had the chance to network while watching challenging pitches taking place during a boat ride on the river Tagus right in front of them.
